SERMON RECAP

Date: October 4, 2026
Speaker: Pastor John Hardie
Sermon Series: What a Kingdom, What a King
Sermon: Warnings To Take To Heart
Scripture: Luke 6

MESSAGE SUMMARY

In Luke 6, Jesus gives His disciples teachings that are both beautiful and deeply challenging. He blesses those who would rather be faithful than rich, popular, comfortable, or admired. He commands His followers to love their enemies, bless those who curse them, pray for those who mistreat them, show mercy, forgive freely, and give generously.

But Jesus ends His sermon with a warning: it is not enough to hear His words or even to call Him “Lord.” The person who hears Jesus and acts on His words is like someone who builds a house on a solid foundation. When the flood comes, that house stands. The person who hears but does not obey builds without a foundation, and when the storm comes, the result is ruin.

Following Jesus means allowing Him the right to command us, correct us, interrupt us, and rearrange our lives. These commands are difficult, but Jesus does not leave us to accomplish them in our own strength. Because Christ has overcome the world, we can afford to be merciful, generous, and forgiving. And through the Holy Spirit, God gives us the power and love necessary to move from simply hearing Jesus to cheerfully obeying Him.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Being familiar with Jesus is not at all the same as following Jesus as one of His disciples.”

KEY LESSONS

1. Hearing Jesus is not the same as obeying Jesus.
Jesus warns against calling Him “Lord” while refusing to do what He says. Discipleship requires more than familiarity with His teachings—it requires action.

2. Kingdom faithfulness often looks very different from worldly success.
Jesus blesses those who remain faithful through poverty, sorrow, rejection, and hardship, while warning those who assume present comfort or approval automatically means they are blessed by God.

3. God calls His people to radical mercy and generosity.
Love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who mistreat you. Forgive. Give. Refuse to condemn. Jesus calls His disciples to reflect the mercy and generosity of their Heavenly Father.

4. Obedience is made possible through Christ’s victory and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus’ commands are difficult—impossible in our own strength. But Christ has overcome the world, and the Holy Spirit works within us, exposing self-deception, redirecting our desires, and pouring God’s love into our hearts so that obedience can flow from within.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. Are there teachings of Jesus that I am comfortable hearing but hesitant to actually obey?

  2. Where am I tempted to measure God’s blessing by comfort, success, popularity, or material security rather than faithfulness?

  3. Is there someone I need to treat with greater mercy—through forgiveness, generosity, prayer, or refusing to condemn them in my heart?

  4. What would “cheerful compliance” with Jesus look like in the next challenge I face, and am I asking the Holy Spirit to help me obey?

PRAYER FOCUS

Lord Jesus, forgive us when our lips call You Lord, but our lives resist Your Word. Teach us to trust Your victory, receive the help of Your Holy Spirit, and obey You with willing hearts. Make us merciful as our Father is merciful—ready to love, forgive, give, and do good even when it costs us. Build our lives on the solid rock of hearing Your words and doing them. Until the day we see You as You are, let our lives agree with our confession: You are Lord. Amen.
