🎙 Speaker: John Hardie
📖 Series: The Life That Overcomes
📝 Sermon Title: “Overcoming Hate and Fear”
📖 Scripture: 1 John 3:11–4:21

📝 Message Summary

Continuing through The Life That Overcomes, Pastor John Hardie explored the Apostle John’s repeated call to love one another—not merely in words, but through sacrificial action shaped by the love of Christ. Drawing from 1 John 3–4, the sermon emphasized that real Christian love is rooted in the Incarnation: Jesus truly came in the flesh, gave His life for us, and now calls His people to reflect that same self-giving love toward one another.

Pastor John compared John’s writing style to waves at the ocean—repetitive, steady, and meant to wash over us again and again until the truth reshapes our footing. Throughout the sermon, he highlighted that love and faith are inseparable. Those who truly know God will not only confess the truth about Jesus but will also practice righteousness, forgive others, and love fellow believers in tangible ways.

The message also addressed the danger of offense, resentment, and unresolved bitterness within the church. Pastor John warned that hurt pride and fear can become “the devil’s bait,” leading believers toward avoidance, hostility, or hatred rather than reconciliation and love. Yet through the Holy Spirit, believers have already overcome the spirit of the world. Because God first loved us, we are empowered to forgive, serve, and move toward one another in love rather than retreat into fear.

Ultimately, the sermon reminded the church that God’s love is not meant to remain abstract or sentimental. His love is brought to full expression through His people as they lay down pride, extend grace, and choose sacrificial love within the body of Christ.

💬 Quote of the Week

“When we take offense, we see someone who is out to insult us, diminish us, oppose us, or hurt us; but the biggest contributor to the problem is often our own hurt pride, insecurity, and fear—and we can easily be led into hatred against that person.”
