📝 Sermon Title: The Foundation
📖 Scripture: 1 John 1:1–4
Message Summary
Kicking off the new series The Life That Overcomes, Pastor John Hardie began with “The Foundation,” reminding us that the Christian life must be built upon something solid and unchanging—the truth of the Incarnation. In 1 John 1:1–4, the apostle John emphasizes that this message is not theoretical or symbolic, but rooted in real, historical experience: “that which we have heard… seen… and touched.”
John presents himself not by name, but as both a faithful witness and one deeply loved by Jesus. From this posture, he calls the church back to what is essential: holding fast to what has been revealed in Christ. The foundation of our faith is that Jesus—the eternal Word who was “from the beginning”—truly became flesh. The Incarnation is not just a doctrine to affirm at Christmas, but the very basis for understanding who God is, how He relates to us, and how we are called to live.
Pastor John highlighted three key movements in the text: what has been manifested (clearly revealed in the life of Jesus), what must be proclaimed (boldly declared in a culture hesitant about truth), and what results in joy (a full and complete joy found in abiding in Christ). Because Jesus is both fully God and fully man, we are not only given a Savior to trust, but also a model to follow—one who calls us into real fellowship with God and with one another.
Ultimately, this foundation leads to a life that overcomes. When we cling to the truth of who Jesus is and live in step with Him, we are anchored in something eternal. And from that place, we are invited into a life marked not by uncertainty or fear, but by confidence, clarity, and deep, abiding joy.
Quote of the Week
“The foundation of our faith is the truth of the Incarnation.”
Key Lessons
Our faith is rooted in reality—Jesus is not an idea, but the incarnate Son of God who entered history.
What has been clearly revealed (manifested) in Christ gives us confidence in what we believe.
We are called not just to believe the truth, but to boldly proclaim it in a culture of uncertainty.
True and lasting joy is found in abiding in Christ and sharing in His life together.
