Sermon Recap | 08/02/2026

Date: August 2, 2026
Speaker: Pastor John Hardie
Sermon Title: Peace Keeping
Scripture: Philippians 4:5–7

📖 Message Summary

Life rarely unfolds exactly as we expect. Throughout Scripture, God’s people experienced disrupted plans, painful circumstances, and unexpected trials. Yet God remained sovereign, using even those difficult events to accomplish His purposes. When life unexpectedly “punches us in the mouth,” we must leave room for God to work through what we could not foresee.

Sunday’s message focused on experiencing and keeping the peace of God. Pastor John drew attention to two small but important words: “let” and “and.” The word let means to allow. Jesus tells His followers not to let their hearts be troubled or afraid, because they have divine support through the Holy Spirit, divine truth through His Word, and divine peace that the world cannot provide.

Philippians 4 calls us to let our gentleness be known, let our requests be made known to God, and refuse to let anxiety govern us. We turn from fear and worry toward God through prayer, specific requests, and thanksgiving. Gratitude restores perspective and bends our hearts back toward hope. Through this deliberate turning, God can change the music playing within us—moving our hearts “from blues to bluegrass,” from heaviness and discouragement toward renewed hope and joyful confidence in Him.

Then comes the word “and.” It shows the connection between bringing everything to God in prayer and receiving His guarding peace: “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This peace is not given merely for our comfort. It grounds us so that we can stand with Christ, withstand the pressures of the world, and faithfully witness to Him in every circumstance. We keep Christ’s peace by allowing His peace to keep us.

💬 Quote of the Week

“Draw from heaven that sweet repose
Which none but he that feels it knows.”

🔑 Key Lessons

Let the peace of Christ govern your heart.
Jesus has given His followers the Holy Spirit, His living Word, and His own peace. We must not allow fear, anger, or anxiety to take control.

Remember that the Lord is near.
The Great Overcomer is never distant, unavailable, or surprised by what we are facing. We can approach Him confidently in every circumstance.

Turn anxiety into prayer and thanksgiving.
Rather than holding our concerns inside, we should bring specific and honest requests to God while remembering His goodness with gratitude.

Allow God’s peace to guard you.
God’s peace protects our hearts and minds, grounding us so that we can stand firm, endure trials, and faithfully represent Christ to the world.
